The City of Lincoln
The historic City of Lincoln is located at the northern end of the Fosse Way constructed by the Romans from Lincoln to Exeter. Ermine Street the Roman road from London to York also passes through the City with the Humber being crossed by a ford. The Romans constructed a Colonia at the top of Lincolnshire edge this took the form of a military camp and a settlement where soldiers who had served their time in the army were allowed to marry and settle down.
After the Norman Conquest, the strategic importance of the City was recognised and the Normans built a Cathedral and Castle on the site of the Roman settlement. The strategic importance of the City declined with the development of the Great North Road (A1) and the building of bridges over the River Trent at Newark 18 miles away.
