House For Sale £1,250,000
Bassett Avenue, Bassett, Southampton, Hampshire SO16

Description
This extremely handsome period home occupies a prime location close to the city centre of Southampton.

“As the name would suggest, the property began life as the coach house belonging to a grand manor, which sadly burnt down over one hundred years ago, ” says Naomi. “My mother bought the property back in 1996, at which time it was in a really sorry state. It hadn’t been looked after for many years and so was basically derelict when she took ownership, but nevertheless she fell for it the minute she set eyes on it. It’s one of the oldest and finest houses in the area, and it’s absolutely beautiful to look at. Mum decided she’d rescue it and breathe new life into it, so she spent the past two decades lovingly and very sympathetically bringing it back to life.”

“The architect who designed the main house that was destroyed all those years ago also designed this property so it’s almost like a mini manor house. It has wonderfully high ceilings and beautiful period features, and the rooms are generously proportioned so there’s a tremendous sense of space throughout. Elements such as the kitchen and bathrooms have been tastefully updated, and mum decorated using a more modern colour palette, but in a period style, so i’d say that the balance she struck between old and new is just right; it’s a really elegant house, but also a comfortable home and one that’s perfect for modern living.”

“The garden is another amazing feature of the property. It wraps right the way around the house and is subtly divided into four quite distinct areas so there are places for sitting out, relaxing and entertaining. At the back and side the ground is very flat and both areas are dotted with beautiful mature trees that mush be some of the oldest in the city. There’s also a huge driveway on which you can park eight or nine cars, and a little courtyard that feels nicely tucked away. The whole space is very private, the back is bathed in sunshine during the summer months and it’s a very peaceful garden so sitting out there you feel nicely removed from the everyday hustle and bustle of life.”

“Each room has its own distinct character and charm, but for me, one of the most impressive spaces has to be the reception hall. It has the original paneling and a beautiful double-height ceiling so the minute you set foot through the front door you get this amazing sense of grandeur.”

“The house sits at the top of the avenue and so access to the motorway is quick and easy, it takes just ten minutes to drive to both the train station and the airport, and there’s a fantastic array of shops and amenities in the city centre so it’s a really convenient location. It also takes no time at all to get to the beach, there are a couple of golf courses within striking distance and there’s mile upon mile of beautiful open countryside just minutes away by car. What more could you want?”

“This is the house in which my siblings and I grew up, and it was such a lovely family home. It was also a great party house, a really magical place at Christmas and we had countless summer garden parties. It’s a place that holds lots of really fond memories.”

“Restoring this house was a real labour of love for my mum and she has transformed it into an exceptionally elegant family home, and one that has a very warm and welcoming feel throughout, ”

“It’s been the hub of family life and a great entertaining house, and although we’ll be sad to let it go, we’ve no doubt that the new owners will love it every bit as much as we do.”
