The Development

The Surrey nursing home has a rich history of care and an individual approach, making it the nursing home of choice for many families.

A family run business since 1932, Birtley House's greatest asset remains the continuity of the Whalley family's active involvement, which now spans to almost 90 years, together with their determination to offer individual care in a warm and welcoming environment.

The ‘family home’ atmosphere has always been a key factor in the popularity of Birtley House. Residents and their own families and later new generations have been known to move into the care home, able to with the fond memory of their parents or even their grandparents time here.

Unrestricted visiting times, the vast estate with plenty of private spots and the ability to purchase your own apartment really does offer a ‘new home’ option to those who require long term care, somewhere that can be personalised and lived in happily whilst new memories are made, with the security of knowing that 24 hour nursing care and support is always there.

Those who live in Birtley House will always be supported and cared for, with care plans that are tailored to them and revised frequently, with the Residents input and approval. For those who are able, there are plentiful opportunities to enjoy community interaction, events and social occasions, in addition to the daily activities. Location

Nestled within 48 acres of beautiful Surrey Hills countryside, Birtley Mews is unlike other supported-living developments.

The grounds surrounding Birtley House provide a serene setting for the Nursing Home and Mews. The eight acres of formal gardens incorporate easy-access paths to allow our less mobile Residents to enjoy much of the gardens and there is an on-going programme of installing additional pathways to facilitate further access. Throughout the gardens there are many seats which provide a place to rest or to simply sit and enjoy the view. The ‘rooms’ within the garden include a Rose Garden, the Secret Garden, an Orchard, a pond with Koi Carp, and the Kitchen Garden.

The grounds, extending to a further 40 acres, include a lake stocked with brown trout for fly-fishing, a cider-apple orchard with around 700 trees and a woodland which is actively managed by The Birtley House Estate. Various local businesses practice traditional woodworking crafts, stone carving, arts, yoga, bushcraft and much more. Most of these artisans bring their craft into the care home for our residents from time to time, offering further unique experiences.

The Kitchen Garden and Orchard provide a wide variety of salad crops, fruit, vegetables, cut flowers and pot plants for the home. Much of the seasonable produce is incorporated into the residents’ menus while the surplus is made into a range of Birtley House preserves and chutneys. Surrey Beekeepers manage a set of hives which produce Birtley House Honey.

Maintaining and encouraging an interest in the outside world is a vital part of the person centred care home life experienced at Birtley House. As some residents are no longer able to visit the outside community, we endeavour to bring the community to them instead, helping to ensure an interesting, varied and balanced lifestyle for all.
