House For Sale £1,795,000
Canyon House, Fellows Road, London NW3

Description
Named after Laurel Canyon, the mountainous Hollywood neighbourhood which inspired its design, this exceptional house was entirely reconfigured in recent years by Studio Hagen Hall, introducing a powerful Californian modernist aesthetic to the existing 1960s architecture. Drawing on a heady blend of influences, including West Coast sunsets, the films of Stanley Kubrick, and the Case Study house of Charles and Ray Eames, the resulting spaces exceed the sum of their parts, beautifully marrying tactile finishes with an ethereal manipulation of natural light. Canyon House is configured across three interlocking storeys, positioned between private gardens at the front and rear, a short walk from the cafés, restaurants and green spaces of Primrose Hill and Hampstead Heath.

The Architect

Founded by Louis Hagen Hall, the studio is known for taking a holistic and immersive approach to each project. Often working with clients from the outset to source, design, and execute renovations and new build projects, Studio Hagen Hall’s spatial planning expertise and interior design nous ensures each brief exceeds and surpasses expectations.

Studio Hagen Hall’s portfolio spans residential, hospitality and commercial projects at varying scales, all connected by their pragmatic design and expertly balanced interiors.

Canyon House is the practice's latest project and was featured in The Modern House journal shortly after it was completed. If you would like to read more about the inspiration behind the design, please click here.

The Tour

The house is located on a quiet residential street, set back behind a gated front garden, which offers privacy from the road itself. Entry is via a long corridor with bespoke storage spaces, a concealed utility cupboard and a guest WC to one side. The ground floor opens to a beautiful lounge and dining room at the rear. The aesthetic draws on sixties conversation pits to create an intimate space with built-in seating, a sliding partition from the dining room and integrated shelving. The tonal palette is formed of burnt oranges, umber, sienna and dusty pinks, which further allude to the West Coast seventies aesthetic.

The dining room adjoins and links to the kitchen via an open countertop, riffing playfully on the twentieth-century serving hatch to create an uninterrupted sightline from the back to the front of the plan and the lush green trees framed by the kitchen's window seat. The kitchen is bespoke and designed by Bysse. Cabinetry throughout is formed of elm wood, with pale microcement surfaces, fluted glass panelling and brass fixtures. Appliances are integrated and include a white induction hob that chimes anachronistically with the sixties material palette.

The first floor comprises two bedrooms. The main bedroom has an en suite bathroom configured in a truly dramatic fashion with a fluted glass partition and sweeping curtain, sliding to reveal a brass-framed, cork-lined room with a full-size bath, shower and twin sinks. Surfaces are finished in dusty pink microcement, while a skylight overhead brings natural light deep into the spaces. The bedroom has a double-height, mono-pitched ceiling with exposed beams, which match the newly installed floating bedside tables. The second bedroom sits at the rear of the plan, and a second guest bathroom is opposite.

The lower-ground floor of the house has been converted into a fully sound-proofed and air-conditioned recording studio. It has a bathroom and independent garden access so that it could be a private self-contained flat.

Outdoor Space

The house is accessed by a beautifully established, gated front garden. A polished concrete path leads up to the house, while on one side, a gravelled bed acts as a perfect seating area beneath the shade of a mature palm tree, a fig tree and lower-level plants and shrubs. These spaces are visually linked to the interior by the pine, fig and palm trees, which remain visible from most spaces inside the house.

The south-facing back garden is accessed via the lower-ground floor studio. It has a similar amount of mature plants, trees and shrubs lining its borders, as well as pale pink painted fences and trellises, which create a wonderful level of seclusion and privacy. A countertop has been fitted at the foot of the garden and runs the width of the space against the fence, creating another area to entertain or to grow potted plants.

The Area

Canyon House is a 10-minute stroll from the restaurants, boutiques, pubs and delis on Erskine Road and Regent’s Park Road, including Lemonia, Odettes and La Ferme, The Lansdowne (pub and dining), Primrose Bakery and Melrose and Morgan (deli and grocer). It is within easy reach of the shops, cafes and restaurants on the high street and the nightlife of Chalk Farm and Camden Town, including The Roundhouse concert venue. Many of London’s best schools are within close proximity.

The bucolic woodland and meadows of Hampstead Heath are one mile north of the house, where one can enjoy year-round freshwater swimming in the nearby men’s and ladies' Bathing Ponds and some of London’s most beautiful woodland walks. In addition to elevated views of the city from Parliament Hill, there are tennis courts, cafes and Kenwood House, a wonderful 17th-century country house and gallery.
