Description
South-facing 2 bed ground floor apartment within this Lutyens-designed Grade 1 listed mansion set in magnificent parkland. Garage, tennis court & a pool included. Hot water and heating also included. No pets

Middleton Stoney is a small village set between Bicester to the East and Lower Heyford to the West. It has history dating back to at least the 13th century, a fact confirmed by the age of the Jersey Arms hotel/ restaurant. The access to both towns and arterial routes is excellent, with Bicester a short drive away (from where London Marylebone is as little as a 42 minute journey by rail) and Oxford a straight run to the South. Surrounding the village is wonderful open countryside and farmland with some delightful established walks including at least one tree lined avenue that was once a Roman road.

There really is nowhere quite like Middleton Park. Originating from a place called Home Wood in the early 13th century, the park was established and landscaped in the early 18th century, gradually evolving to what we see today. Owned by the Earls of Jersey for many generations, the mansion house from the 1750s was demolished in 1935 to be replaced "no expense spared" by a new design by Edwin Lutyens. His bold building incorporated many forward-thinking ideas from underfloor heating in bathrooms to a central heating system supplied from the cellar. Everywhere the design is consummate in its expression of sublime architecture, but it is also practical with lifts, shallow stairs and vast windows. To live in such a place is a privilege.

The communal entrance hall serves just a handful of apartments. A wide original door, complete with beehive handles, accesses the apartment via an unusually broad hallway. To the right, through a door that's glazed to bring light into the hallway, is a splendid living room. The original marble fireplace still sits proudly on the end wall; although no longer active it is a wonderful feature. A pair of openings in the South wall provide splendid views across a broad expanse of lawn and fields beyond the boundary. One includes a floor to ceiling sash window while the other houses a wide, glazed door that opens out onto your personal terrace and the lawns beyond. It’s a large room by most standards, and within the renovations modern radiators, elegant modern lighting, and TV/radio/sky digital connections have also been fitted.

Back to the main hallway, and ahead of you is a refitted kitchen. Units run round three sides, and integrated goods include a dishwasher. Note that to maximise the space the pair of cupboards immediately outside the kitchen now has a fridge freezer in one, and the other is shelved as a very useful and large pantry, with further storage cupboard above. Head round the corner and on the left is another vast cupboard, this time with hanging rail in the left side, shelves for airing on the right side, and another pair of cupboards above. A communal laundry room in the basement, means your washers and driers are out of the way and accessible 24/7.

The first of the two bedrooms is opposite the cupboards. Another floor to ceiling sash window insures this bedroom, a decent double room, enjoys that same south facing view over the gardens. Next door, the larger of the two bedrooms is surprisingly big. Another of those large sash windows faces South, and the room is ample for the largest of double beds with masses of room for drawers, wardrobes, dressing table etc. And this room also features an ensuite. This has just been refitted in a very classic style with a Burlington suite that includes a wide, low level shower with both a soaker head and a separate hose. There is also a further bathroom. This follows exactly the same style and the theme of the ensuite, albeit this time with a bath including a shower screen.

Outside, the house sits in extensive grounds. The formal lawn is reminiscent of a Regency palace and throughout the grounds the many mature trees frame large grass areas, landscaped but appearing naturally placed. The entrance to the park is via imposing gates just off the centre of Middleton Stoney village, past the gatehouse and through trees. At the family church public access ceases and beyond it a long drive runs through beautiful scenery and past four lodges before it turns a full circle in front of the house. This apartment comes with a single garage and also communal parking situated to the right just before the lodges. And here there is a seasonal swimming pool in a walled area for communal use. At the other side of the driveway there is also a tennis court, again available for all residents. And the apartment itself looks out across lawns to the South, with its own terrace and use of the lawns.
