Local Area

Located at the heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands, Cheadle is a picturesque market town with many historic buildings and features from the Georgian and Victorian eras, although it can trace it’s routes back to medieval times. Of particular significance is 'Pugin's Gem' the Roman Catholic church of St Giles, commissioned in 1841, designed by awn Pugin and considered to be the finest Victorian Gothic church in the country and a must see during a visit to the town.

Cheadle is surrounded by countryside and is the gateway to the beautiful Churnet Valley with its amazing canal and river walks and steam railway. Nature lovers are well catered for in the valley, with National Trust - Hawksmoor ancient woodland and Consall Nature Park close by and all open to the public. It boasts a linear Local Nature Reserve, Cecilly Brook, which stretches for 1.25km and is one of the most important sites in Staffordshire for water vole. It also boasts wild flower meadows and ancient hedgerows. With a well-maintained pathway, it is accessible to all. Hales Hall Pool, dating from 1822, has pool edges that are designated a site of biological importance and a diverse range of emergent pool side vegetation occurs including marsh marigold, flag iris and rare for Staffordshire, the greater tussock sedge. A small reed-bed of bulrush occurs at the east end of the site. Again, the surfaced paths are accessible to all.

The town has many independent shops including traditional butcher, baker, jeweller, bespoke gift shops, wool and craft shops. There are many cafes and restaurants offering a warm welcome. Be sure to visit the traditional fish and chips shops or savour a traditional Staffordshire oatcake!
