Location

Built in 1901 and designed to be a tuberculosis hospital, the King Edward VII building was officially opened by His Majesty King Edward VII on 7th June 1906. The location was chosen specifically for its bright, south facing hillside position with open views to the South Downs, the air being purified and the climate pleasant. The hospital was designed by renowned Arts and Crafts architects, Charles Holden and Percy Adams, featuring Mulmein teak staircases and Doultons Carrera tiles which remain intact. Since then, City & Country have expertly restored this magnificent building to it's former glory. The gardens were originally laid out by the influential garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and represents one of her most ambitious projects, these enchanting gardens have been reinstated and are a nationally important heritage asset to be enjoyed by residents and guests.
