About houghton

Houghton is one of Cambridgeshire's most sought after and special villages that meet the criteria of having a good local shop, some great pubs in walking distance, fantastic community feel, quiet but not deserted and yet still being within a couple of miles of 2 towns with all of the larger shops and entertainment options you could ever need. The option if you choose, to not need to get in the car at the weekends and Houghton allows for that. The location allows for easy access to London and Cambridge plus other major centres such as Milton Keynes for work which Houghton does perfectly.

Houghton is a destination in its own right with a National Trust Mill and multiple amazing countryside and riverside walks. The village also has 2 lovely tearooms and 2 great pubs (The Three Horseshoes and the Three Jolly Butchers) plus a short walk across the meadows to the Hemingfords gives you access to even more great pubs the Axe and Compass and the award winning Cock at Hemingford Grey (winner of the National Pub of the year award in 2019). There is also the option to hire a rowing boat or a punt at the end of our road and explore the river Great Ouse and even stop off at a secluded island for a private picnic. Just 2 miles away St Ives is a wonderful riverside market town with a full range of shops and further eating options and 2 miles in the other direction is the larger town of Huntingdon with the mainline train station plus all of the usual superstores and entertainment options including a cinema. A little further afield is the thriving University City of Cambridge with everything from live music and events, theatre and talks to historical punting tours along the backs of the famous university buildings. Another great attraction is the proximity to the beautiful Norfolk coast and with 90 mins you can be on the incredible beaches at Holkham or Wells next to the Sea or visiting amazing historic towns like Holt or Burnham Market. There is also a fantastic local farm shop within a ten minute drive that sells local home grown produce as well as having a café, restaurant and farmyard and reptile visitor centre extremely popular with local families.

Houghton has an incredible community feel with events taking place throughout the whole year from the village feast week and music festivals in the summer to the Christmas lights event in December that attracts hundreds of people from the surrounding area. Funded by a monthly bacon sandwich stall at the clock tower. There are also multiple amateur dramatic society events, safari suppers and wine or gin tasting events. The community shop is very much the centre of village life where you are unlikely to pop in for a loaf of bread without seeing someone you know. Mill Street itself has a great community with all the neighbours being extremely friendly and having regular mill street drinks or barbeques through the summer and over the Christmas periods.

Houghton is amazingly well connected and serviced. London Luton and Stanstead airports are both about 1 hour drive. Huntingdon (5 minute drive) is an extremely well equipped town with retail and leisure parks, cinema and a railway station that can now connect you directly to Horsham (via Gatwick airport), or York and Edinburgh going the other way. Huntingdon to London Kings Cross has multiple fast trains every morning averaging 47 minutes. It is actually quicker to get to work in the city than for many people living in London itself. Cambridge is a 25 minute drive, though when works on extending the A14 are complete this will be even quicker. There is also a very cheap guided bus that takes you straight to Cambridge city centre from a stop on the outskirts of the village - where you can enjoy weekly markets, boutique shops and an extensive nightlife!

There is something for everyone in Houghton and you can involve yourself as much or as little as you like. There are multiple clubs and societies that cater for the young as well as the seniors with an 'Outstanding' preschool through to volunteering through the local time bank or maybe joining the local gardening club! If you are sporty, then there are many clubs, from Pilates, football, cricket, boules, Tennis to name a few but with the river on your doorstep you will be spoilt further with access to water sports, owning a kayak is a must. In the neighbouring village is a watersports lake where you can enjoy paddle boarding, wild swimming and wakeboarding and if the weather permits a cool off swim in the water. If you are less adventurous they have a fantastic pizza oven and café on site, so you can enjoy the beauty of the lake without getting wet.
