House For Sale £425,000
Radwell Road, Milton Ernest MK44

Description
Cosy detached cottage in popular north bedfordshire village - with scope to extend

There’s one thing about the Victorians that is indisputable – they knew how to build irresistible, red brick and slate country cottages. Mount Pleasant, in Milton Ernest, is no exception. With two bedrooms, lovely little garden to the front, gravelled parking, summerhouse and barn, the cottage is ready to welcome only its third family since it was built in the latter part of the 1800s. Unlisted and unattached, you have the valuable option, if you need more space in the years to come, of reactivating lapsed planning permission to add upstairs shower rooms to the downstairs bathroom, a larger kitchen and two further bedrooms.

The small, North Bedfordshire village of Milton Ernest is bisected by the A6, making it easy to reach the Rushden Lakes shopping destination in one direction, and the County town just four miles to the other, its fast trains to London and elsewhere and its exceptional schools. The village has its own popular church primary and is in the Sharnbrook Academy catchment area.

Shielded from the main road by the houses directly behind it, Mount Pleasant is set well back from the lane which leads to Radwell, with its garden overlooking green common land to either side and the lovely crab apple and cherry blossom that, each year, joyfully announces the arrival of spring. You’ll no doubt be a regular visitor to Milton Ernest Garden Centre at that time of year and the village shop and post office there will keep you going back time and again, as might well the real ale and good food at the C16th Queen’s Head, also just a few hundred yards away from your front door. A little further on, with its C11th origin, is the glorious Grade i-listed Church of All Saints.

Your dog will be very happy to take you on lovely daily walks through beautiful countryside along the River Great Ouse, but one thing’s for sure – you’ll all love coming home to your cosy cottage.
About the property

Even the gravelled parking area bears out the name of the cottage, with its hedging, flower bed and beautiful silver birch standing to welcome you in front of wonderful willow hurdles. Those hurdles, along with borders that will keep the keen gardener happy and hedging that keeps wildlife happy, surround an elevated lawn which is surprisingly private and peaceful, while providing a safe space for children to play. The old brick terrace running in front of the cottage is waiting for a summer table and chairs for morning coffee and early evening glass of wine.

The open timber and slate porch, with its attractive wooden balustrades, needs a little tlc but adds to the charm of your cottage. Built by John Helps Starey, the owner of Milton Ernest Hall, for his estate workers in the late C19th, Mount Pleasant is fascinating for having retained many of its Victorian features. It’s not just the lovely doors and door furniture, it’s the old brick and timber floors and, more unusually, the cast iron-shuttered vents in each room.

Wooden working surfaces atop charming, bespoke kitchen furniture contrast delightfully with the slate surface around the Belfast sink, which picks up the floor beneath your feet. And who can resist a walk-in pantry, so desired that high-end builders now include them in new homes?

The oldest part of the house is just two up, two down but when those four rooms are a good size, with high ceilings and oozing with personality, numbers are secondary. Your bathroom is downstairs, yet a waste for an upstairs shower room is laid to the house. And you have a summerhouse and barn outside, each of which has power and light – a home office, perhaps? Plans in place for an extension, of course, offer the possibility in future for a transformation into a spacious family home. In the meantime, stoke up the fires in those lovely woodburners that send heat upstairs too, and enjoy the cosiness and character of your delightful cottage home.
