A converted French Barge named ‘La Peniche’ currently berthed at Falmouth, likely to be of interest for private use and enjoyment or perhaps once again as commercial premises.
Background
Originally named ‘Raymond’, the nearly 40m steel-hulled craft was built in the 1930’s near Nancy in France as a commercial barge but during the Second World War was requisitioned by the German Army. After the War she was discovered in Genoa, Italy and retrieved by her owners who in due course restored her. Jumping forward to 1984, ‘Raymond’ was converted to take passengers rather than cargo and reborn as ‘Delta’. In 2003 she was acquired by an Englishman, Mr Roger Collins, who for about fifteen years cruised the river from Chalon-sur-Soane in Burgundy providing fine dining to passengers whilst they revelled in the delightful scenery French countryside passing by.
It was in 2018 that the current owners acquired ‘Delta’ and having dry docked in Paris for survey and inspection, the formal handover took place in Normandy after an overall journey across France of over 700km and through nearly 180 locks. In February 2019 ‘Delta’ arrived safely in Falmouth Harbour prior to being transferred to Butler’s Boat Yard, Penpol for a refit before returning to Falmouth and a berthing alongside North Quay. It was in 2020 that rebranding to ‘La Peniche, Falmouth’ took place and she opened as a contemporary dining restaurant with Bed and Breakfast.
