corbett estate quick history The St.Germans Estate near Lewisham was built in 1898 by Archibald Corbett. Corbett had a desire to create a healthy environment for families to live in. The streets were built on a north south grid where possible so that the houses could get as much natural light as possible. Just 3000 homes were built on 278 acres, so 11 houses per acre. Corbett wanted people to have open space and fresh air.
Compare 11 houses per acre to today's London scene.
This was very modern in 1898 and the open space, low density housing is one of the things that makes what is now called the Corbett estate very popular with families today. Corbett was so popular that the official name of the St.Germans estate was lost and the area became known as the 'Corbett Estate'.
