SELLERS INSIGHT One of the main criteria, when starting our search for a new home, was an easy commute to work. We were living in the New Forest at the time, and the journey to London each day was exhausting.
My husband is originally from Essex and loved the countryside and general landscape of the county, so we decided to centre our search around Colchester and it's outlying villages. The commute into London is now only fifty minutes and with Wormingford being located on the 'right' side of the town, we can get to the station in under ten minutes, which is a real bonus on a busy Monday morning.
The house comprises two original barns which were converted by a previous owner, who painstakingly moved one barn, piece by piece, from the nearby house of Rochfords, to join the second barn at its present location.
The conversion took place in the mid-1980's and the result is a spacious, bright and airy house; large windows were installed throughout; we have glass doors that lead onto the garden from almost every room; and the bedrooms have high vaulted ceilings with one wall of the master suite made almost entirely of glass. That being said, there is still plenty of history in the bones of this house. We believe the original beams possibly date back to the 1450's when they would have been taken from old ships for building work - you can see their stories etched into the wood.
In the past couple of years, we have carried out a substantial amount of work on the house and the gardens. The older barn was in need of some refurbishment, so it's been stripped back and fully insulated; all the doors and window frames have been replaced with hardwood, made by a local craftsman; and we've installed a new kitchen, utility room and bathrooms.
We are very much outdoor people, so the garden is our pleasure and we've worked very hard to achieve something beautiful yet low maintenance. The rose bushes and peonies are spectacular when in bloom and our woodland walk has a stunning display of snowdrops in spring. The house is also bordered by half a medieval moat which now serves as home to a variety of ducks and wildfowl. We also built our oak framed gazebo, which offers the prefect setting to relax and unwind, especially with our freestanding BBQ and firepit, allowing us to sit outside in all weathers and enjoy the garden.
One of the aspects we'll miss when we leave is the ability to walk directly from the house with our dogs, to meet with friends in the village or visit the various local pubs, without having to get in the car. We have numerous lovely walks right on the doorstep making it one of the highlights of living here.
We have decided to move to be closer to elderly relatives but, if we could pick up the house and take it with us, we would.
LOCATION Wormingford is a well serviced village located on the outskirts of Colchester, offering an array of amenities to cater for daily life, with a farm shop, local village pub and restaurant -The Crown pub, which hosts a range of events, visiting mobile library and weekly coffee mornings; "the pub has a very good restaurant and take away service. There are two farmers who sell locally reared meat, one whose wife bakes delicious pies and sausage rolls and delivers to the door. The village has a fantastic joinery manufacturer who do repairs. There is a Village Hall, with playground and playing fields, which hosts a regular quiz night. The three adjoining villages have additional shops, including a Coop and pharmacy.
Colchester Royal Grammar School for Boys and the Colchester County High School for Girls are among the best- performing schools in England. There are also two private preparatory schools nearby.
Locally, there are miles of public foot and bridle paths along with The Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) & Stour Valley. Nearby Colchester has all the conveniences of a large town, including direct mainline train links to London and other major cities. The A12 is five-miles away, as is the A120 which leads to Stansted Airport.
