We believe part of Eastern Boathouse was built in the 1860s and extended in the 1880s. It was built by the Burnham Oyster Company, then the largest producer on the river as their receiving and distribution warehouse from whence oysters were put on the train to Billingsgate, amongst other destinations. Oysters were Burnham's largest industry for many years and most of the townsfolk were working on or around the water. The River Crouch was known as The Wall Fleet or The Burnham River in those days and a large portion of the stretch of river between Brandy Hole up river and the sea was owned by the Burnham Oyster Company.

Brief history
Sometime in the early 1900s Eastern Boathouse became part of the Eastern Yacht Club from where it got its name. It was used by the club for boat and mast storage. In 1911 the Eastern Yacht Club merged with and became the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. They retained ownership of Eastern Boathouse until they moved from the Old Club House into their current premises next door built in 1931. The Eastern Boathouse was sold to P. Newall Petticrow Ltd boat builders and used as their chandlery, store and offices. In the mid 1980s Petticrow moved to their new premises and sold the property. It was subsequently converted into a ground floor marine workshop with residence above, as it is now. The first floor deck area is supported by a 6 ft iron propeller which came from the steam drifter 'Girl Nancy' which was the motor yacht of Mr P Mitchell, commodore of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in the 1930s. The 'Girl Nancy' was broken up in 1949 by Petticrows.

Eastern Boathouse is situated on The Quay, in the town of Burnham, a well-known sailing destination. For the sailing enthusiast there is Burnham Marina.
