Dorset House, Gloucester Place, London

Description
INCLUSIVE OF BILLS & COUNCIL TAX | VIEWINGS: 2nd - 7th June

Architecture and property

Stepping across the threshold into the entranceway of Dorset House, you are brought back to the wonderful splendour of 30s modernism.

Dorset House was designed in 1935 by Joesph Emberton Architects at the height of the Art Deco/early Modernist scene sweeping across Europe. Grade 2 listed in 1998, this is a significant retained example.

This particular block was built in an 'ocean liner style', popular in the mid-1930s. The block entrance and communal areas are particularly appeasing to modernist principles, with long lines, strip windows and nautical-inspired curves.

This standalone suite is located in one of the internal private courtyards between the blocks, with its own private entrance. A wrap-around courtyard garden covers three sides of the property, and is a resplendent spot to sit in the sunshine and splendour in the quiet oasis away from the city.

Through the front door, a corridor leads you to an internal bathroom finished in a beautiful handmade white tile and bathtub.

Adjacent is the bedroom, with huge fitted wardrobes covering one wall.

The reception room to the rear really is the centrepiece, with windows and secondary glazing on all three sides. Hardwood flooring throughout blends perfectly with the aesthetic, particularly with choice pieces of industrial furniture from the vendor. An integrated kitchen lines the far wall, perfectly finishing off the space.

The Area & History

Marylebone and the City of Westminster have a plethora of 1930s apartment blocks and buildings, all designed around these foundations of modernism.

Formerly hunting grounds and the site of a huge manor house (where the Conran shop is today) up to 1790, the area was intensely redeveloped with lush garden squares and big Georgian terraces.

Famous past residents include Lord Bryon, Charles Dickens and the Beatles.

Out and About

Marylebone is a historic area with an independent spirit right in the heart of the West End. Old Marylebone High Street is at the epicentre, with a huge variety of unique boutiques, restaurants and historic pubs. The Conran Shop, famously has its main designer outlet on Marylebone high street, and with the Chiltern Firehouse close by, this is a hub for celebrity faces.

Our favourite local pub, the Sir John Balcombe, is just around the corner, and (on recommendation!) the best place for coffee is Monocle Coffee, only a few minutes away.

Unspoilt green spaces are also just on your doorstep, with Regents Park to the North,  and Hyde Park to the South West.

Transport

Marylebone Station is minutes walk away, serving mainline trains to Warwick, Stratford & Birmingham. Baker Street station is also a short stroll away, connecting the Jubilee, Bakerloo, Hammersmith & City and Circle lines.

Paddington Station is only two stops away from Baker Street station, and connects direct to Heathrow via Heathrow Express, or one stop to Bond Street for Elizabeth Line straight to Heathrow as well.

A multitude of buses go past right outside on Marylebone Road, connecting the city East to West, 24 hours a day.
