SELLERS INSIGHT We moved to Colchester nearly twenty years ago, from the outskirts of London, in search of a different way of life for our young family. With two young daughters, and the eldest just about to start secondary school, it was the ideal time for a new start in a new place.

Without any family or friends in the locality, we started our search completely blind with no preconceptions as to the best area, and stumbled on Lexden purely by chance. We had looked at a few houses in the surrounding villages, but none were quite right, and all seemed a little remote, with the children having to catch a bus to school each day.

As soon as I walked up the path and into this house, I knew we had found our next home. It was quirky, spacious and charming. A real sense of history (after we moved in, I did some research and discovered the house had once been a church school for the poor in the 1800s); and set in a perfect location - tucked away from the road in a conservation area, it was secluded with complete privacy, surrounded by nature, but within easy walking distance of the town centre and all the local schools.

The house itself needed a lot of work, having been owned by the same family for over forty years, so we set about modernising the interior whilst retaining as many authentic features as possible, including the restoration of the original beams and the wood panelling in the old classrooms. Originally a single storey, we have added an additional floor and a mezzanine gallery; created additional bedrooms and bathrooms; and removed false ceilings to create double height rooms, discovering more hidden windows in the process. The end result is a spacious contemporary home, filled with light, but with the hallmarks of history present throughout.

We have absolutely loved our time here and feel very privileged to live in this wonderful house. There are so many things we will miss when we leave; the convenience of the location – we can walk into town in twenty minutes; we have a bus stop and a post box at the end of the drive. A local pub and church; access to the A12 and the train station are just minutes away, and we're surrounded by nature with lovely walks directly from the house - the list is endless!

It will be a major wrench to leave this much-loved home that has served us so well over the years. We have some amazing memories of our girls growing up here and all the family parties and celebrations we've had, but we now need to downsize. We feel we have just been custodians for the past nineteen years and it's time for another young family to enjoy all the benefits of living in such a wonderful place.
