Why you’ll like it:
Excluding all the glamour of the Art Deco period, Astra House was completed in 1938 on the site of the infamous Victorian gentleman’s club, The New Club. Originally intended as holiday apartments for the RAF, hence the name, unfortunately the war claimed their time so the apartments were sold instead to highflying trend setters seeking the glamorous coastal lifestyle of this intercontinental resort- and this prestigious building continues to attract those who like to work and play hard.

An impressive seafront entrance secured by phone system opens to a grand communal hall complete with a hand laid Terrazzo floor and magnificent Deco staircase which spirals towards the top of the building. Discreetly tucked away, a lift awaits to whisk you to the hushed 3rd floor and the original front door to this light and spacious apartment – and opposite is a storeroom which at about 7’ x 6’ is as large as some double bedrooms- so storage isn’t an issue, and as there are only two or three on each floor, these are sought after within the building and command a premium.

Inside is bright and cheerful with practical floor to ceiling fitted cupboards as you come in which are perfect for coats, bags and vacuum cleaners. Ahead, the inviting main studio room has plenty of floorspace to play with, so there’s ample scope for zoning into distinct areas for seating, eating and sleeping. High ceilings make the room restful whilst the big west windows frame oblique sea views, bringing a holiday feel to the space as well as afternoon sunshine.

Nicely separate, the brand new kitchen is simple but stylish, decorated in the colours of the sea that you can enjoy through the window and which has a ceramic hob, oven and hood integrated as well as solid oak worktops. With space for a american style double fridge freezer and under sink fittings for a mini dishwasher. Galley in style, there’s space for an under counter fridge as well as extra shelving on the opposite wall – although don’t forget you’ve a café beneath you, Preston Street next door is famously lined with intercontinental restaurants and Waitrose is just at the top of the road!

Surprisingly spacious and with natural light, the modern bathroom has all you need including a classic white suite, a traditional shower attachment on the bath and heated rail for warming towels, although this may well be your opportunity to create the fabulous, spa like bathroom of your dreams over time. Very few flats in Astra have their own store room outside the flat. This studio has a great advantage of having one of these right opposite the front door . This store is about 4 x 4 square and 10 ft tall. A great advantage to keep excess stuff ! Suitcases out of season clothes and somewhere for mops bins and hoovers . This makes it so much easier to keep the studio free of clutter not needed day to day

Agent says:
“This building is popular as it’s not only a famous Art Deco landmark opposite the beach, it’s also secure and friendly.”

Owner’s secret:
“Big and bright it’s easy to live in, and it’s very quiet for such a great central location. I never wanted to leave this flat as it is such a light and airy space that is unusually big for a studio . Sadly covid debts for saving my business I’ve been forced to sell. Allowing separation of each area has made it a lovely home for me"
