SITUATION
Blanefield and its immediate neighbour of Strathblane, is located at the southern foothills of the Campsie Fells and within the Blane Valley. It has a strong sense of local community and has a couple of well stocked general stores, health centre, hotel, and a Wilson’s coffee shop. It is only 10 to 15 minutes’ drive to the suburb of Milngavie, where you will find a greater selection of shops and amenities, including a railway station with services into Glasgow’s West End and city centre. The village has a bowling green and two village halls and a new community hub library. Surrounding the village are some wonderful walks including the John Muir and West Highland Ways.
HISTORY
New City Row and the adjoining West Row are not only at the heart of Blanefield, but also at the heart of the village’s history. Dating to the early 19th century, the terraced buildings (lower and upper flats) were workers’ cottages for the village’s printworks in what was the hamlet of Netherton. The printworks date as far back as 1790 when the village was also home to a bleachworks. With the railway arriving in 1867, one can imagine the vibrant community that inhabited the area at that time. The works have all long gone and the railway line closed in 1959.
Over the decades, these homes have become charming one bedroom cottage flats and No 2 New City Row is no exception. Situated away from Glasgow Road, it is tucked down a private lane within which the seven properties of New City Row share unallocated parking areas.
