The ancient stannary town of Tavistock, lies just outside the Dartmoor National Park boundary and can trace its history back to 974 when Tavistock Abbey was founded.

It is steeped in history being the home for Sir Francis Drake during his formative years. The great mining boom of the 19th Century brought prosperity to the area with nearby Devon Great Consols, the world’s most productive copper mine and the development of Morewellham Quay as one of the busiest exporters of copper in the British Empire.

Nowadays this thriving and bustling market town offers an excellent range of facilities and amenities including specialist shops, supermarkets and restaurants including the Michelin starred Cornish Arms. There is also a renowned Pannier market and regular farmers’ market. For entertainment, Tavistock Wharf is a privately run arts centre offering cinema, theatre and live music.

There are also excellent facilities for sailing on the Tamar Estuary and nearby Plymouth (10 miles) has a number of marinas as well as the Royal Western Yacht Club, and provides not only a safe estuary but also a perfect stepping off point for crossing the Channel or sailing up and down the coast of Cornwall or Devon.

Directions
