In all about 1.5 acres

A Grade II Listed period mill house comprising of 5 bedrooms and 4 reception rooms full of character in the main house and a wholly separate cottage which can be used as an annexe, au pair accommodation or for holiday letting income. In between the two wings is an historic watermill which is no longer in use but milled flour as recently as 1993.

History

Built in 1773 the current Watermill buildings have changed hands only three times in the past 170 years. Two generations of the Burch family were millers and ran it along with a schoolhouse and bakery until 1932. The Brown family owned it for the next 50 years until they sold it to the Marston family in 1982.

The buildings that had fallen into disrepair were painstakingly restored and in 1991 and 1992 the Marston family were rewarded with Hythe Civic Awards for their contribution to the town and were also presented with Shepway’s Building Design Award for the restoration. In 1992 their efforts were rewarded when, after a motionless 60-year period, the water wheel turned again and in 1993 flour was milled once more.

The Gardens

The Watermill is set within about 1.5 acres of stunning gardens including a sunny south-facing terrace, extensive lawns, waterfall, pond, running stream and an oak framed summerhouse. There is vehicle access to the gardens whilst there is parking and garaging adjacent to the entrance including a double and single garage.

Location

The Watermill is one of the most iconic period landmarks in the popular town of Hythe. The property is within walking distance of bathing beaches which are increasingly popular with all year-round cold-water swimmers.

The house is also within a level walk of the bustling High Street full of independent shops and supermarkets including Waitrose. The nearby Royal Military Canal is a haven for wildlife along with picturesque level walks and cycle routes.
The town is well served by a choice of leisure amenities including golf, tennis, bowls, sailing, windsurfing and football, there are excellent travel links including Sandling railway station, M20 motorway (Jct. 11), the nearby Channel Tunnel and HS1 services from Folkestone and Ashford.
